As you say, the MySQL dependency is technically optional since it is possible to use different database services with VuFind. However, the primary purpose of the .deb package is to enable a user to very quickly and easily obtain a fully functional VuFind instance; I have some concerns that if we removed the MySQL dependency, that would make it harder for the majority of users to get VuFind running, since it would add an extra step to the process. I do not have a lot of experience with creating .deb packages, so perhaps there is an option that would make this work better for everyone -- if so, I am certainly open to suggestions.
For your situation, though, it might also be worth considering installing VuFind in a different way, either from one of the archive files or using Git. In the long term, these may actually be easier and more flexible to maintain than a deb-based installation anyway.
I am happy to discuss this further if you still have questions, ideas or concerns.
